“Everyone will have a seat in the new personalized bus”

A source from Shanghai Ba-Shi Public Transportation told Shanghai Morning Post that with the rapid growth in the number of vehicles and road congestion affecting the city, the company will design several new optimized bus routes for commuters that will avoid traffic, shorten travel time and achieve a point-to-point "one-stop" service.

“The monthly income of couriers will exceed 10,000 yuan during the 11.11.”

The manager of a local express delivery company said that ahead of the November 11 (11.11) national shopping festival, at least 10 delivery companies are offering 8000 to 10,000 yuan salary to anyone willing to work as a courier, according to Shanghai Morning Post.

Apart from the unusually high salary for full-time couriers, the companies are also hiring temporary workers who can utilize their free hours to sort packages at warehouses. The time and labor to sort and deliver parcels is expected to double during 11.11 due to the increased number of online orders.

“I’d have to pay 20,000 yuan every day to work off my debt!”

An unemployed young man surnamed Xia in Shanghai recently turned himself in to local police for getting involved in lone sharking. Xia started to borrow money from strangers using a P2P (peer to peer) lending app on his mobile phone earlier this spring after losing his job. He faked his financial credentials on the app’s loan application form by claiming he works for a foreign corporation.

After obtaining cash from unsuspecting lenders, Xia splurged it all on dining, drinking, partying and girls. After many months of squandering and with no real income source, Xia was indebted over 700,000 yuan ($103,522) and unable to pay the money back to his lenders. By turning himself in to the police, he hopes they will provide him protection until someone can bail him out.

“This sofa belonged to me before you were even born.”

A sixth-grade boy wrote an essay about his growing pains in a two-child family to describe how he and his younger brother fought over a sofa and nearly resorted to fisticuffs. Despite the student’s good writing and exciting plot twists, the essay received a low score from his teacher for not being "politically correct.” The essay soon went viral, sparking advice from netizens about how Chinese parents should help their spoiled firstborns cope with their new little brothers or sisters.

“This shows that the Chinese government endorses foreign talents.”

Joaquim Nassar, dean of SJTU-Paris Tech Elite Institute of Technology at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was the latest foreigner to receive the new unified work permit since the city’s launch of a pilot unified work permit program starting November 1. The permit streamlines the previous two types of permits – foreign expert certificate for top talent and regular work permits for ordinary expatriate employees.

The new permit is issued in paper form during the pilot and will be issued as a card starting next April, which then can be used nationally and is expected to be connected to all provincial foreign affairs departments, public security, customs, tax administration and educational sectors.
